Meet the BioWheels-Asheville Staff

At age 11, Matt Johnson does a stallled nose wheelie.

BioWheels founder, Matt Johnson, is still at home on 2 wheels. He still fixes and sells bikes.

Name: Matt Johnson

Hometown: Chagrin Falls, Ohio

My bikes: Maverick ML8, Vintage Bontrager Ti SS, IF Planet Cross

Favorite Bike: It’d have to be my current ML8

Memorable Riding: Major back-country tours in Canadian Rockies, and anything over 3 hours in Pisgah

Accomplishments: Started BioWheels at age 24, crossed country on bike survival style, moved BioWheels 3 times, married a hottie, built 81 Coxe Ave building with friends, run BioWheels.com since 1995, can ride secret Pisgah trails from his farm.

Interesting Tidbits: woods boy, loves hiking, olives and a good pilsener. Way into chillin’ and breathing. Here is 2010 interview with Matt from Dirt Rag.

Eric Krause's cycling roots took hold on many muddy mountain bike race courses.

Name: Eric Krause

Hometown: Pittsburgh, PA …have called Asheville home since 1996

My bikes: Blue RD1.2, Spot Longboard SS Belt Drive, custom 1995 Fat Chance Ti Yo Eddy, VooDoo Loa Ti Cyclocross, GT Windstream modified cruiser commuter

Favorite Bike: hopefully the Jamis Dakar XCR Pro that I’m getting soon

Memorable Riding: I’m so completely spoiled with my long list of great cycling travels… Still my most memorable ride is the one I did yesterday.

Accomplishments: racing bikes since 1993, making it all that time without ever shaving my legs and still out-pedaling many twenty-somethings

Interesting Tidbits: I geek out on nutrition & supplements to compensate for my lack of genetic athletic prowess. I lead a double life as a runner. I love sunshine. I know the fit measurements on all my bikes to the millimeter (more performance enhancement). I could have partial hearing loss from lots of loud, live music - now I wear earplugs, so speak up…kidding!  I’d be glad to listen and talk with you more about it over a Belgian Ale or a neat Kentucky bourbon or a Merlot for that matter – cheers!

John is our "Rainman" of all things sales and bikes!

Name: Jonathan Kelman

Hometown: Summerfield, NC

My bikes:  08 Turner RFX, Salsa El Mariachi rigid 29er, Salsa A La Carte hardtail, bizarre custom mid 90s Kona cruiser singlespeed.

Favorite Bike:  As much as I enjoy my rigid 29er, plush squishy bikes that still pedal well remain my favorite.

Memorable Riding:  My favorite rides involve some combination of the following:  some kind of epic-like technical climb, probably longish, followed by some technical and/or super fast and flowy singletrack descending.  Then beer, swimming, ice cream great and possibly some carne asada.  However, my most memorable individual rides have been especially great because of the people I’ve been riding with.  Some examples:

Acomplishments:  Being in graduate school for far, far too long;  marrying a fantastic women; siring a beautiful daughter, mountain biking everyday for 477 days even while travelling across the country.
